In 1957, Walter Nawalaniec, a patrolman for Cleveland Metroparks, reported to Robert Bordner of the Cleveland Press and Miss Eunice Morton of Richfield that he had observed that the buzzards returned each year on the same day after their migration.

Buzzards Day is on March 15, and we’re here to inform you how to celebrate it in the most appropriate manner. Do you know that it has been more than 64 years since it was observed that buzzards return from their annual winter migration to the south at the same time each year? Buzzards Day was established to honor the annual return of these magnificent birds from migration. It is especially popular in Ohio due to the historical significance of buzzards in the region.

The background of Buzzards Day

In 1957, Walter Nawalaniec, a patrolman for Cleveland Metroparks, reported to Robert Bordner of the Cleveland Press and Miss Eunice Morton of Richfield that he had observed that the buzzards returned each year on the same day after their migration. Even though he was aware that the buzzards returned annually at the same time, he was delighted to discover that they did so on the same calendar date. This also held true in leap years.

In that year, nearly 9,000 visitors arrived to witness the birds’ return from their expedition. Buzzards Day was created as a result of the yearly influx of thousands of bird enthusiasts to Ohio to witness the return of the buzzards. The Chamber of Commerce decided to extend a special greeting to these birds. To celebrate the arrival of spring and the return of animals, a traditional American breakfast of sausage and pancakes was prepared. Since then, pancakes and sausages have been enjoyed for brunch on Buzzards Day.

Buzzards are a magnificent bird species with characteristics not found in other scavengers. For instance, buzzards produce sounds throughout the year. However, there is a minor distinction between the American and international usage of the term buzzards. Buzzards in the United States refer to turkey vultures, which are a subspecies of New World vultures. In other regions of the globe, buzzards are classified as Old World Vultures. The term refers to hawks or buzzard hawks in North America.
