Child Labor Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Child Labor

Child labour refers to the exploitation of children, particularly in developing nations, depriving them of childhood and education due to their impoverished economic circumstances.

June 12 is observed as Child Labour Day or World Day Against Child Labour each year. Since 2002, when the International Labour Organisation (I.L.O. ) declared it an international day to raise awareness about child labour and the need to prevent it, this day has been observed annually. Since 2002, Child Labour Day or World Day Against Child Labour has been an annual event during which nations and international organisations unite to combat child labour. As more than half of these children are subjected to the worst forms of child labour, it is of utmost importance to find ways to eradicate child labour from its roots in addition to raising awareness and encouraging activism. These are exceedingly dangerous and illegal, such as human trafficking that results in forced prostitution.

The background of Child Labor Day

Child labour refers to the exploitation of children, particularly in developing nations, depriving them of childhood and education due to their impoverished economic circumstances. Child labour has existed in various forms throughout history. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, there have been documented instances of minors working twelve-hour shifts daily.

To support their rapidly industrialising economies, western nations required an increasing amount of labour, the greatest source of which was children. In contrast to earlier times, when a single man of the house was sufficient to sustain the family, the economic downturn during the industrial revolution had a significant negative impact on the average man and his family. Children, along with women, were forced to work in factories to earn scarcely enough money to ensure their survival, and this exploitation of children as a source of cheap labour has persisted ever since.

One out of every five children in Africa is involved in child labour, placing Africa at the top of the list for child labour around the globe. 7 percent of all children are victims of child labour in the Asia-Pacific region, which has the second-worst statistics.

Child Labour has been one of the most frequently discussed topics at the United Nations and other international organisations, and serious efforts have been made to prevent child labour; however, approximately 160 million children are still engaged in child labour, and the world still requires additional efforts to eradicate child labour from its roots.
