Curling is a team sport in which players use curling brooms to guide stones across a rectangular sheet of ice towards a target area comprised of four concentric circles. Each team consists of four players, and each side possesses eight stones. It is played on an ice rink where water droplets have been sprayed and frozen into a surface known as pebbled ice.
Curlers slide granite stones with coloured handles over this pebbled surface using curling stones. In other words, the stone curls inwards or outwards depending on the direction of the curler’s rotation.
The objective of curling is to achieve the highest possible score, which is determined by the distance of the stone from the centre of a target. To score points, stones must at least touch the outer rim of the target.
Curling originated in Scotland in the 16th century, where it was played on frozen ponds and Lochs. It originated from the rumbling sound a 20-kilogram granite stone made as it traversed the ice. The first curling stones were used in 1511 and originated in Scotland. In the 1600s, stones with handles were added. In the 20th century, the evolution of sports was standardised, and indoor, refrigerated ice facilities were utilised.
Curling is a seemingly odd sport, but one that many enjoy for its amusement and intrigue.
