The background of Tex Avery Day
Frederick Bean Tex Avery was born on February 26, 1908 in Taylor, Texas. In 1926, Avery graduated from North Dallas School. He was interested in becoming a newspaper cartoonist, but he did not complete the three-month course he enrolled in. Patricia, his girlfriend at the time, was an employee of Universal Studios when he married her in 1935.
In 1928, Avery began his career in Los Angeles. After a few months of performing menial tasks, he began working as an inker for Winkler Pictures. During the studio’s brief existence, he worked on the animated short film “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.” He began his career at Universal Studio Cartoons (Walter Lantz Productions) as an inker, but quickly advanced to animator by 1930. Avery worked for Bill Nolan, who gave him room to be creative. In 1935, Avery left Walter Lantz Productions and convinced Warner Bros. producer Mr. Leon Schlesinger that he was an experienced director, securing a position at Warner Bros. In the years that followed, he developed less realistic cartoon characters, such as Porky Pig, and deviated from the realism typically employed by studios such as Disney.
Avery’s innovative and audacious ideas and methods revolutionised the animation industry. He had a successful career and created characters still in use today. Taylor, Texas, his hometown, even designated February 22 as a local holiday in his honour. Even if the day is not a holiday for you, take the time to watch some “Looney Tunes” and honour Tex Avery’s genius.
