The background of Day of Memorial And Respect For Veterans

Kosovo, officially known as the Republic of Kosovo, is a landlocked nation in Southeast Europe. Over four centuries, the Ottoman Empire ruled Kosovo until Serbia seized control during the First Balkan War (1912-1913). Until the end of World War II, Nazi Germany assumed temporary control of Kosovo. After World War II, Kosovo became an autonomous province of Serbia within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (S.F.R.Y. ), with rights roughly equivalent to those of the S.F.R.Y.’s six constituent Socialist Republics.

In the late 1980s, a ruthless dictator took power. By the year 1989, he had eliminated Kosovo’s autonomy and imposed direct control. The forced government began the Kosovo war on February 28, 1998, and it lasted until June 11, 1999. The “Kosovo Liberation Army,” a rebel group comprised of Kosovo Albanians, fought back against the soldiers of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, who controlled Kosovo prior to the war. In 1999, the United Nations Security Council intervened and adopted Resolution 1244, which ended Belgrade’s control over Kosovo. Kosovo was subsequently placed under the administration of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), and NATO was authorised to establish a peacekeeping force.

Kosovo announced its independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008. Despite the fact that 110 nations recognise Kosovo as a sovereign nation, Serbia, Russia, China, Brazil, India, and Spain do not.

In the central town of Morin, Kosovo, a memorial to those who perished in the 1998-1999 conflict with Serbia was unveiled. The origin date of this holiday in Kosovo is unknown. However, its purpose remains to honour those who have died defending the nation and those who continue to serve.
