Día de la Constitución 2023: On December 6, which is known as “Constitution Day” in Spanish, we commemorate the anniversary of a referendum that took place in Spain back in 1978. On this day in history, Spain ratified a new constitution outlining citizens’ rights and broke free from authoritarian authority. This was a significant turning point for Spain because it gave the nation the freedom to live and express itself without being under the rule of a single tyrant. Given the hardships endured by the Spanish people, the inauguration of a new democracy must be celebrated with great fanfare!
Let’s first examine the true meaning of the Spanish Constitution before delving into its historical background. A country’s laws, which define the responsibilities and authority of the government, are outlined in its constitution. In addition, the constitution acts as a guarantee of the people’s protection and certain rights. Furthermore, the formation of “Día de la Constitución” brought an end to Francisco Franco’s 36-year dictatorship and instituted a limited monarchy based on the constitution. This was a necessary step in fostering the growth of the democratic idea.
June 1977 saw the holding of fresh legislative elections following Franco’s death. On October 31, 1978, the Spanish Parliament approved the constitution with 88% of the vote. In addition, on December 6, 1978, the Spanish people cast their votes in a referendum, which King Juan Carlos signed on December 27. Since then, Spain has observed December 6 as a public holiday.
The seven panelists selected to work on the draft constitution are referred to as “Los Padres de la Constitución,” or the “Fathers of the Constitution,” because the text was created following extensive consultation. The nation also takes tremendous satisfaction in its accomplishments because the shift to democracy was a difficult one, and on this occasion, they celebrate loudly and with pride. Actually, a lot of people take advantage of the event to stage political rallies and marches. Spain’s Congress likewise invites visitors and opens its doors to the public on this day.
