Discovery of Puerto Rico Day 2023: History

Christopher Columbus was an individual characterized by his unwavering conviction that additional routes, yet unexplored, did indeed exist, preceding all others. Columbus, a dedicated scholar of science and geography, set sail towards uncharted territories during an era when the presumption was that all knowledge had been uncovered. Four notorious voyages lead him to discover the West. On September 24, 1493, following the contentious outcomes of his initial expedition, he set out on his second voyage, which involved more than 1200 soldiers dispersed across 17 ships. November 19, 1943, almost two months later, he established anchorage in a port adjacent to an island that he subsequently designated San Juan Bautista.

A day has been proclaimed in nearly every American nation to commemorate the founding of that nation by Christopher Columbus. Discovery of Puerto Rico Day simultaneously recognizes the indigenous culture, dialect, and traditions of the island while commemorating the explorer’s voyage.

Columbus has been honored by the nation on a multitude of occasions. In recognition of their Spanish heritage, a stamp was issued in 1893 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of his landfall. The design portrayed him atop a ship surrounded by a crew.

On the islands, Discovery of Puerto Rico Day is a national holiday. On this day, public schools, banks, and offices are closed, and a grand procession is held in every significant city. Additionally, the day marks the beginning of the sacred month of December. Christmas decorations are immediately hung up following the holiday.
