The NCAA was established in 1906 to regulate collegiate sports rules and promote young athletes. Beginning in the 20th century, mass formations and gang collisions made football a violent sport. During the 1904 season, there were 18 fatalities and 159 serious injuries. Some institutions halted football on their campuses, and the public demanded reform or abolition of the sport. In October 1905, President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt urged universities to straighten up their act. As football-related fatalities and injuries persisted throughout the 1905 season, New York University Chancellor Henry M. MacCracken persuaded 13 institutions to implement rule changes. 62 colleges and universities joined the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, the precursor to the NCAA, shortly thereafter.
