First Sunday of Advent 2023: This year, the First Sunday of Advent is on December 3. It is the beginning of a four-week celebration that starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. Christians all over the world celebrate Advent, which derives from the Latin word for “arrival,” as the beginning of the spiritual period leading up to Christmas, when Christians celebrate Jesus’ birth, and the start of a new Christian year.

The History Of The First Sunday Of Advent

In the Christian community, the First Sunday of Advent is a holy day that marks the start of the holy Advent season and a chance to start over. Christians look forward to the holy year starting with Advent, which is a time of waiting and getting ready for the birth of Christ and his return in the Second Coming.

No one knows for sure when Advent began, but it was around the year 480 when a new rule told monks they had to fast every day in December until Christmas. Saint Gregory of Tours says that our celebration of Advent started in the fifth century, when Bishop Perpetuus told people to fast three times a week from November 11 (St. Martin’s Day) until Christmas. In this way, Advent was sometimes called Lent of St. Martin. By the year 581, this was the way things were done all over France. To be exact, more devoted followers fasted every day.

In the 1300s, most people still observed the fast of Advent, but not many people actually fasted. Then, it was only between November 30, which is the feast day of Saint Andrew, and Christmas Day. It happens on the Sunday closest to St. Andrew’s Day, which is the fourth Sunday before Christmas.

The ritual of Advent didn’t change until the Second Vatican Council made some small changes that set Advent apart from Lent and made it clear that Advent is a time of hope for Christ’s resurrection.
