International Accounting Day is observed on the 15th anniversary of the publication of a seminal work by an Italian mathematician.

The field experienced significant growth in importance and demand within the domains of business and finance commencing in the mid-19th century. The Industrial Revolution significantly proliferated and enlarged the global business landscape, necessitating corporations to establish and maintain robust accounting divisions that could participate in every facet of business operations. Presently, this is one of the most lucrative business majors, encompassing both multinational corporations and small enterprises. Presently, an undeniably substantial workforce is engaged in the field on a global scale; in 2018, the United States alone employed approximately 1.5 million accountants and auditors, according to the Bureau of Labor.
