International Drop a Rock Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The Word Rocks Project was the originator of International Drop A Rock Day in 2015. It brings together thousands of individuals from around the world for a common purpose.

On International Drop A Rock Day, observed annually on July 3, rock art is used to inspire and demonstrate compassion to others. This is an unofficial holiday that many would have liked to be official so that they could spend more time getting inspired and having fun with the hundreds of theme-word pebbles that are hidden around the world. Every July 3 for the past seven years, tens of thousands of people from all over the globe go on a rock hunt, while tens of thousands more create the object being sought. Creators and investigators have one thing in common: they enjoy themselves and are generous.

The background of International Drop a Rock Day

The Word Rocks Project was the originator of International Drop A Rock Day in 2015. It brings together thousands of individuals from around the world for a common purpose. This unofficial holiday was created by its benefactors, which now include both The Word Rocks Project and The Kindness Rock Project. They issue annual theme words or phrases for use in the celebration. The purpose of the holiday is to demonstrate generosity, spread optimism, and have fun, while displaying originality in rock word art. Globally, word rock art groups celebrate the holiday and establish social media accounts to promote their works. With themes such as “Together” for 2020, “Be The Light” for 2021, “Harmony” for 2019 and “You Matter” for 2018, we can only say that the themes flawlessly reflect the celebration’s objectives.

The art of designing rocks to transmit information is not a novel one. It did not begin in 2015 or even within the past few hundred years. Tens of thousands of years ago, it began. Over 30,000 years ago, cave paintings were created in caverns all over the world, and as early as 500 B.C., the popularity of pictographs increased as a result of their evolution. The ancient Egyptians pass on the history of their gods through cave engravings and murals. Although cave paintings are not always about depictions of history, as some religious and traditional cave paintings demonstrate, the overwhelming majority of the art directs viewers to essential information.

The same is true for word rock artists who design rocks with themed words and hide them on International Drop A Rock Day with the intention that those who discover them will be inspired and feel a sense of community with other observers around the world.

Activities on International Drop a Rock Day

Sculpt your pebbles

One of the two best ways to commemorate this holiday is by decorating as many rocks as possible. On the boulders, be sure to write the proposed theme word or phrase for the year. Then, conceal them where they will eventually be discovered by others. You could also write encouraging words on stones, place them in a bottle, and present a special message bottle to a loved one.

Conduct a search

The alternative best method is to go on a rock search. There may be a few that will leave you inspired, gratified, or even exhilarated. You can also search for pebbles for your local rock musician.

Share it on social networks

For each rock design you create or discover during your quest, be sure to snap a photo and post it on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #DropARockDay. Make others conscious. And don’t limit yourself to a single day; you can release a rock of kindness at any time.
