Key Deer Awareness Day is observed annually on March 11 to bring attention to the imperilled key deer. This diminutive relative of the Virginia white-tailed deer is exclusive to the Florida Keys, which influenced their moniker. Poaching, habitat loss, vehicular accidents, diseases, and climate change pose a significant threat to the species, prompting the establishment of a special day to raise public awareness about this issue. As for the date, it was specifically chosen to commemorate the 1967 Federal Register listing of the key deer as “endangered.”

The background of Key Deer Awareness Day

The general consensus is that key deer arrived in the Florida Keys aeons ago from numerous mainland locations. The Wisconsin Glacier dissolved between 6,000 and 12,000 years ago, causing the surrounding water level to rise and dividing the previously long peninsula into a collection of small islands. As a result of the newly formed liquid barriers, the deer remained separated from their relatives on the mainland. They have consequently evolved over time to acquire various physical characteristics and behavioural patterns that are optimal for island existence.

Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda, a 13-year-old Spanish sailor, was travelling to Spain from Cartagena in the 1500s. Unfortunately, his ship was devastated, and he was held captive for 18 years by Native Americans. His travels to date were recorded in his memoirs, as was the mention of a very special animal: the key deer. This would also go down in history as one of the earliest mentions of this species. According to Fontaneda’s memoirs, key deer were prevalent in the Keys at the time and were considered food by both Native Americans and travellers.

Key deer were hunted without regulation for an extended period of time, bringing them to the verge of extinction. In the 1940s, only fifty key deer remained in the globe. Thankfully, the government and local communities intervened to save this species. The National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957, and subsequent conservation laws were enacted. Poachers who unlawfully hunted key deer were subjected to stricter penalties, fencing was installed along roadways to prevent the animals from wandering onto the roads, and speed limits were imposed so motorists could avoid hitting these animals if they did wander onto the main roads. As a consequence, the population increased, and today there are approximately 1,000 key deer residing in Big Pine Key and No Name Keys — the only locations where they can be found.

5 IMPORTANT DEER FACTS THAT WILL TURN YOU INTO A FA(W)N

This is due to their diminutive size compared to other deer relatives, with males weighting 80 pounds and females weighing between 60 and 65 pounds.

Miniature deer parents produce fawns with hoofprints no larger than an adult human’s fingerprint.

They visit hardwood hammocks and mangroves primarily for grazing and limited sleeping, and pine Rocklands, freshwater wetland habitats, and button forests for all their requirements.

Their diet consists of over 150 different plant species, but for optimal nutrition they must consume mangroves (red, white, and black) and thatch palm berries.

Living in the Keys has allowed key deer to adapt well to the water; they are the finest swimmers among most other deer species and swim between islands.
