Kosrae Constitution Day 2023: Date, History, Amazing Facts about Micronesia

On September 14, 1529, Lvaro de Saavedra, a Spanish navigator returning from Tidore to New Spain, was the first Westerner to see Kosrae Island.

The 11th of January is observed annually as Kosrae Constitution Day 2023 to commemorate the adoption of a constitution by the State of Kosrae. Formerly known as Kusaie or Strong’s Island, Kosrae is an island in the Federated States of Micronesia. As such, it is one of the four states that make up the Federated States of Micronesia, and it consists of the island of Kosrae and a few surrounding islands and islets. Lelu Island, which has a population of 1,500, is the most significant of these neighbouring islands. The land area of Kosrae is approximately 68 square miles, allowing it to support 6,600 people. Mount Finkol, which stands at a height of 2,080 feet, is the highest point of the state of Tofol.

HISTORY OF KOSRAE CONSTITUTION DAY

Archaeological evidence indicates that Kosrae Island was settled between the years 10 and 1000 A.D., including the city of Leluh, which existed from about 1250 to 1850 A.D., with a peak population of approximately 1,500 people and a size of approximately 27 hectares. The island featured pyramids for the burial of its noble natives.

On September 14, 1529, Lvaro de Saavedra, a Spanish navigator returning from Tidore to New Spain, was the first Westerner to see Kosrae Island. The island was officially ceded to the Spanish in 1668, and they occupied it until 1885. In 1824, when European explorers first made contact with Kosrae, the island’s society was highly stratified, as was typical of the time for the surrounding islands. Kosrae culture was characterised by matrilineal lineage and clans, a feudal system centred on aristocracy (members of which owned land worked by commoners), and villages comprised of small families living in cookhouses.

In 1852, the first mission station was established on Kosrae by Congregationalists, and by the 1870s, nearly the entire island had converted to Christianity. Kosrae is home to numerous Christian sects in the modern era, and religion continues to play an important role in society. On March 15, 1874, Bully Hayes was shipwrecked at Kosrae after his ship, The Leonora, became trapped in Utwe harbour due to a storm. Hayes resided in Utwe for seven months while terrorising the locals. In September 1874, British investigators detained him, but he escaped in a 14-foot boat made from salvaged wood from the Leonora.
