Every second Tuesday in January, which falls on January 11 this year, Poetry at Work Day is observed. Workers appreciate poetry as a form of relaxation and recreation on this day. Poems are a creative technique to improve mental ability and work effectiveness. Poetry is the use of words to convey messages and emotions through structure, style, and rhyme.

Poetry at Work Day: History

The origins of Poetry at Work Day are unknown; however, we value this day since it allows us to employ literature for relaxation at work. Poets are naturally inventive, and employers value this trait highly. Poetry at Work Day promotes worker creativity, which leads to increased efficiency.

Poems are an ancient form of expression that employs figures of speech such as metaphors and onomatopoeia, as well as prosodic components such as rhythm, meter, and sound. Poetry has been existing for thousands of years, but epic poems, widely regarded as the first instances of poetry, first occur around the 20th century B.C. The Aristotle fragments introduced three types of poem genres: epic, comedy, and tragic. Later on, major genres such as epic poetry, dramatic poetry, and lyric poetry were introduced.

Poems are broken into divisions, most of which are stanzas of 12 lines. A couplet is two lines long, a quatrain is four lines long, and sonnets, which were invented in the 14th century, are 14-lined poems. Poetry has a significant impact on business since it allows us to simplify and ‘uncomplicate’ things. Also, it fosters empathy, which in turn aids in the development of excellent working relationships, as well as creativity, which leads to increased productivity at work. It contributes to the maintenance of psychological balance and relieves stress. Poetry keeps us relaxed and makes us feel nice and light-headed while we work. Poetry is celebrated at work by posting a poem on a huge board for everyone to see, hosting poetry slams, and encouraging employees to discuss or produce poems.
