Lady of Aparecida in Brazil 2023: Date, History, Facts about National Sulfur Basin

In October 1717, fishermen reportedly abandoned their nets in the Paraiba River after a day of unsuccessful fishing and recovered a small brown statue of the Virgin Mary. Hours passed while the three fishermen failed to capture a single fish.

In Brazil, Lady of Aparecida Day is customarily observed on October 12th. It is referred to as “Nossa Senhora de Aparecida” and is consecrated to the Virgin Mary Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil. A ten-day festival is held in the city near So Paulo that bears Mary’s name in her honor. Her name is Aparecida, which means “appearing,” because legends abound regarding Our Lady of the Conception’s appearances during trying times, in addition to her first miracle for the fisherman. It is not uncommon for Brazilians from all over the country to congregate in the city of Aparecida in So Paulo on October 12.

The background of Lady of Aparecida

In October 1717, fishermen reportedly abandoned their nets in the Paraiba River after a day of unsuccessful fishing and recovered a small brown statue of the Virgin Mary. Hours passed while the three fishermen failed to capture a single fish. When they decided to attempt it once more, they were on the verge of giving up and leaving. Do you know what was discovered during the final capture effort? A fragment of the idol of Our Lady of Aparecida. They cast their nets once more after retrieving the small saintly idol and captured a great number of fish. This was the initial of Our Lady of Aparecida’s numerous miraculous deeds. Subsequently, she was elevated to the status of the Saint of Miracles and a Catholic emblem.

The site where the miracle took place developed into the city of Aparecida (meaning “she who has appeared”), and a cathedral, which is now a popular pilgrimage site, was constructed to contain the statue.

The figure is approximately 15.7 inches in height and is made of clay. Depicted in an earlier, more luminous brown hue, the statue has since undergone a process of darkening due to prolonged exposure to candlelight and illumination emanating from the altar. The monument’s purple hue and the account of the miraculous event involving a young slave child contributed to its rapid veneration, particularly among the Afro-Brazilian populace.

She has been honored with the dedication of numerous churches in Brazil, with the Cathedral of Brasilia and the National Basilica being the most prominent. Its capacity exceeds 45,000 individuals, making it the second-largest basilica in the globe.

Pope Pius XI bestowed the title of “Our Lady of Aparecida” patron saint upon Brazil in 1929. Brazil has observed the feast day of Our Lady of Aparecida as a national holiday since 1980.
