The background of Mexico: Day of the Pluricultural Nation

The Day of the Pluricultural Nation ensures that the fundamental rights of indigenous peoples are promoted, respected, and protected. Christopher Columbus embarked on a voyage to Asia seven centuries ago, ultimately arriving on the island of San Salvador in North America. Day of the Pluricultural Nation is an indigenous people commemoration and a rejection of the monolithic culture imposed by Christopher Columbus.

With the support of the Chamber of Representatives, the Mexican Senate proclaimed October 12th, 2020, the Day of the Pluricultural Nation, on November 19, 2020. The day commemorates the victory of the Mexican heritage spirit while rejecting the lingering vestiges of colonialism that plague the nation. All individuals of Mexican descent are entitled to equal rights and opportunities.

It encourages all Mexicans, indigenous and non-indigenous, to investigate their Spanish heritage. Over 15 million Native Mexicans inhabit the country’s territories in tranquility. In spite of having their rights ratified into the same constitution, indigenous populations encounter a multitude of institutional obstacles, such as restricted access to basic education, uncontaminated water, and prospects for establishing a livelihood beyond their place of origin.

An estimated 25% of Native Mexican women and 15% of Native Mexican men do not have a primary school education, with only 50% of those enrolled completing their academic journey. In an effort to encourage Hispanic students to pursue higher education, numerous businesses and organizations have established scholarships for this population.

The day serves as an instructive occasion for the entire Mexican populace. The Governorate of Public Education and the Institutes of the Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous, under the special direction of the President of the Indigenous Affairs Commission, sponsor seminars in addition to celebrations held throughout the nation.
