This legal document is known as the Great Charter or ‘Magna Carta.’ In addition to limiting the power of the English monarch, it also establishes and records the rights of the free citizens. However, the initial test was less successful than anticipated. It was modified and reprinted in 1216, 1217, and 1225. Henry III, John’s predecessor, led this effort in an effort to acquire more men to his side.
Certain clauses, such as the monarch’s authority to raise funds or dispatch troops to war, were eliminated from the version of 1216 compared to the original document.
