National Bug Busting Day is observed on January 31, June 15, and October 31. Encouraging parents to examine their children’s hair for nits on these days helps reduce the incidence of lice and their potential for classroom transmission. Lice can affect people of any age, but they prey most frequently on infants between the ages of 4 and 11. Although they are not particularly hazardous, they cause a great deal of annoyance and distress. Because head-lice eggs are difficult to detect, combing damp hair with a special comb allows you to remove nits before they hatch and spread to other people. This method avoids using caustic insecticides and can help schools prevent outbreaks.

In order to proactively combat head lice, the National Bug Busting Day campaign encourages schools across the United Kingdom to select specific days to concentrate on head lice education and asks parents to check their children’s hair thoroughly for nits. Now in its twelfth year, the programme is sponsored by the Community Hygiene Concern (CHC) and the Department of Health. The CHC can provide educators with packages containing specialised combs, instructions, and informational booklets. The CHC promotes a “whole-school approach” to combat head lice so that the entire school community can reap the benefits.
Approximately 5,000 schools in the United Kingdom participate in the programme, sending their students home with educational materials and bug-fighting supplies. Using a specialised fine-toothed comb to comb through damp, conditioned hair is recommended for eliminating lice eggs and nits clinging to hair strands. The procedure is tedious and time-consuming, but it avoids the use of harsh insecticides.
For the most effective results, the CHC recommends that educators and parents choose specific dates throughout the year to focus on louse prevention in their classrooms and groups. National Bug Busting Day aims to make head lice prevention fascinating and enjoyable for children, teachers, and parents by distributing engaging materials, stickers, and activity kits that emphasise the significance of early detection and good hygiene.
