Memorial Day 2023: Date, History, Ideas about Decoration

Robert E. Lee surrendered the last significant Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, bringing an end to the American Civil War.

Memorial Day on May 29 evokes for many Americans thoughts of hamburgers, hot dogs, swimming pools, and summer. But the last Monday of May is primarily a time to honour those who perished while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This holiday is ingrained in the sombre history and customs of the United States. Following the American Civil War, when mourners placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate combatants, the holiday was originally known as “Decoration Day.” Yes, Memorial Day has come to symbolise the “unofficial” beginning of summer, but let us not forget the martyrs who made this possible.

The background of Memorial Day

Robert E. Lee surrendered the last significant Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, bringing an end to the American Civil War. Over 620 thousand combatants perished during the four-year conflict. General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic (an organisation of Union veterans) chose May 30, 1868 as a memorial day:

“The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defence of their country during the recent rebellion, and whose bodies now rest in nearly every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land…”

Logan chose May 30 because blossoms would be in bloom across the nation on that date. By the end of the nineteenth century, Memorial Day ceremonies were conducted nationwide on May 30. States issued proclamations, and the Army and Navy enacted regulations governing appropriate conduct at their facilities.

The first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery was attended by roughly the same number of people as today’s observance: approximately 5,000 individuals. Each monument was adorned with a small American flag, a practise still observed at many national cemeteries. In recent years, it has become increasingly common for families to decorate the graves of all deceased relatives.

By 1890, all northern states had established Decoration Day as a legal holiday. However, this was not the case in the South, where states continued to observe separate memorial days until after World War I.

The date of May 30 persisted for decades. In 1968, however, Congress enacted the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday of May in order to provide federal employees with a three-day weekend. The transformation occurred in 1971. Additionally, the same law made Memorial Day a federal holiday.

5 CREATIVE MEMORIAL DAY DÉCORATION IDEAS

People typically preserve their American flags and only display them on patriotic holidays. This is without a doubt one of those days.

There is no better way to honour our fallen veterans than by displaying dozens (or even hundreds) of flags in your front yard and entryway.

It’s a consumable ornament.

It is patriotic, joyful, and jubilant. Do we need to say more?

Even if you have not lost a family member in the military, you can still honour the fallen by displaying flowers in your residence. The combination of red, navy, and blue dahlias and white rose silk flowers can be visually spectacular.
