Actdumb proposed the day as a May 2020 holiday as a counterpoint to the media’s growing insensitivity towards those with mental disabilities. Actdumb. feared that they would be suppressed or ridiculed once more, and believed they deserved better. On paper, this may not appear to be a national holiday, but it has been observed for years. Many of us would wonder how we went from celebrating the holiday to discussing its historical origins. It is fairly straightforward. When one examines the history of people with disabilities and how they have been regarded throughout time, the results are depressing and disheartening.
People who manifested signs of a disability were labelled as insane during colonial times. After that, people with disabilities were shunned because it was believed they were incapable of performing certain tasks and therefore needed to be isolated from society. In recent years, however, instead of segregating them and placing them in institutions, the community has decided to make light of those with disabilities and treat them as if they are subhuman.
