Resolution of the State Anti-fascist Council for the National Liberation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Herzegovina declared the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia to be the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. A state that offers equal rights to all of its residents and has no connection to the Muslims, Croats, or Serbs.

National Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina 2023: History

During World War II, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was occupied by the Axis powers, who were divided amongst Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, and Italy. Central to the partisan resistance against the occupiers was the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, an organization that galvanized support throughout the nation. Josip Broz Tito founded the Anti-Fascist Council of National Liberation of Yugoslavia (A.V.N.O.J.) in November 1942.

The inaugural session of the State Anti-fascist Council for the National Liberation of Bosnia and Herzegovina was convened in Mrkonjić Grad from November 25 to 26, 1943. During this session, representatives were elected to represent the organization at the second A.V.N.O.J., which was scheduled to occur in the municipality of Jajce, Bosnia. They convened on November 29 to determine the post-war course of action in Yugoslavia. The Resolution of the State Anti-fascist Council for the National Liberation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Z.A.V.N.O.B.i.H.) proclaimed that all people, including Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Montenegrins, and Macedonians, had an equal right to self-determination. This declaration laid the foundation for federal Yugoslavia, in which the people would reside in six constituent republics with equal rights. Thus, Bosnia and Herzegovina was reestablished as an equal community of Serbs, Croats, and Muslims (Bosniaks) within the Habsburg-held territory of the Yugoslavian federation.

The conclusion of the conflict led to the formation of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, where Bosnia and Herzegovina was formally recognized as one of six constituent republics through the ratification of the constitution in 1946. According to the Official Gazette of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina No. 9/95, the Law on the Proclamation of November 25 as the Statehood Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina designates that date as the Statehood Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a national holiday prohibiting the operation of state bodies, legal entities, and businesses.
