National Florida Day 2024: Every year on January 25, we commemorate National Florida Day. The occasion was set aside to commemorate Florida’s admission as the 27th state to join the Union. Florida, sometimes referred to as the Sunshine State, is well-known for its gorgeous scenery and pleasant, sunny weather. Florida’s average temperature falls between 65 and 70 degrees in the north and between 74 and 77 degrees in the south. The weather makes swimming in Florida’s’ chilly waters especially pleasant! Florida offers a plethora of outdoor recreational activities and amusement parks as well. It’s a bustling yet tranquil location to be.
The Native Americans were the first people to live on the peninsula that is now known to be a part of the United States, around 14,000 years ago. Archaeological evidence as well as many Native American artifacts proved this. Juan Ponce de León, a Spanish adventurer, arrived in Florida in 1513 and left written notes. The state’s name was derived from the peninsula he named “La Pascua Florida.” The area was named Pascua Florida, which translates to “Festival of Flowers” in Spanish, due to its expansive and verdant terrain.
Florida was the first area in the United States where European settlers arrived. The region was also home to French and Spanish settlements in the sixteenth century. Spain ruled Florida as a colony from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The 19th century also saw the blending of different communities. Florida developed as a haven for Native Americans, runaways, and African slaves. Together with runaway slaves, the newly formed Native American groups in the South formed the Black Seminoles. Native Americans who relocated to or settled in the state were known as Seminoles.
Likewise, Great Britain ruled Florida in the 18th century. In 1821, following its freedom, it joined the United States as a colony. At last, Florida became the 27th state to join the union in 1845. Every year, we commemorate this day to recall its past and pay tribute to the many hardships it has faced.
