National Greg Day 2023: Date, History and 5 amazing facts about Greg

The first of sixteen popes to have this title was Gregory I, popularly known as Gregory the Great.

National Greg Day 2023: Gregory is the English translation of the Latin “Gregorius,” which was derived from the late Greek word “Grēgórios,” which meant “vigilant” or “watchful.” The term “grēgorein,” which means “to watch,” is where the word “Gregorios” first appeared. When the name started to be used interchangeably with the Latin word “grex,” which means “flock” or “herd,” its original meaning was altered. Popes and other members of the clergy found Gregory appealing because of his reputation as a shepherd. Gregory is tied with Benedict as the most widely used title for the Catholic Church’s spiritual head, after John.

The first of sixteen popes to have this title was Gregory I, popularly known as Gregory the Great. He was the son of a Roman senator named Gregorius, who was born in 540 A.D. into an affluent family with strong religious ties. Pope Gregory I established the Gregorian Mission to convert the Anglo-Saxons who were residing in Britain to Christianity. Upon his death in 604 A.D., he was instantly declared a saint and canonized.

Gregory Peck is regarded as Hollywood’s most charming and endearing actor. He was the only child of divorced parents and was born in San Diego, California, in 1916. Peck was raised unusually, spending the majority of his time with his grandmother, who would frequently take him to the movies to keep him busy. He attended the University of California to study medicine, but he left before receiving his degree to pursue a career in acting. Peck is well recognized for his roles as Captain Ahab in “Moby Dick” and Atticus Finch in the movie adaptations of Harper Lee’s books “To Kill A Mockingbird” and “Moby Dick.”
