National Hummingbird Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Events

There is no verifiable or scientifically researched evidence for the historical evolution of hummingbirds. On his travels to Brazil, a French explorer documented their first public appearance in his journal.

National Hummingbird Day is observed annually on the first Saturday of September, which falls on September 2 this year. Utilise this occasion to educate yourself and others on how to care for and support these incredible creatures, and to participate in a variety of activities centred on them. Some communities observe this day with educational programmes, hummingbird observation opportunities, and field excursions. Male hummingbirds live much shorter lives than females because they expend so much energy defending their colonies. They require a 15-minute respite after every 15 minutes of flight, so we must make our gardens hummingbird-friendly.

The background of National Hummingbird Day

There is no verifiable or scientifically researched evidence for the historical evolution of hummingbirds. On his travels to Brazil, a French explorer documented their first public appearance in his journal. It must have been challenging for them to survive for millions of years due to their size and structure. As gorgeous and valuable as they are, hummingbirds are exclusive to the Americas, particularly North and South America.

Hummingbirds are small, colourful birds distinguished by their ability to hover in midair while swiftly flapping their wings, producing the humming sound for which they are renowned. They are attracted to flowering plants, particularly those with deep throats, and require nectar for survival. Their reliance on nectar has aided the evolution of novel hummingbird species in response to changes in flower composition. Approximately 360 species of Hummingbirds currently exist, with the number of species still increasing. Even with their aggressive nature, up to 25 species of Hummingbirds can coexist and survive in the same area. Due to their small size, hummingbirds are susceptible to being preyed upon or trapped in man-made or natural perilous situations. Among these threats are pesticides, adverse weather, large insects or predators, habitat loss, and poor feeders.

Even though these creatures have survived for a long time without the direct and active assistance of humans, this is changing as more information is accumulated on their vulnerability and survival threats. National Hummingbird Day exists to honour these magnificent soaring birds. It acknowledges their vital role in pollinating our flowers and identifies situations and hazards that are detrimental to their survival. Additionally, it promotes secure behaviours that will ensure their survival.
