The background of National Native American Day

National Native American Day celebrates Native Americans, as the name implies. It is believed that they were the initial inhabitants to establish themselves in America. Prior to the arrival of the first European explorers and colonizers, the entire North American continent was inhabited by Native Americans. Given the historical importance that Native Americans have contributed to the United States, it is only appropriate that they be honored with a designated day of celebration! However, despite the perception of many that Native Americans are a long-lost heritage, their historical and cultural foundations have been nurtured for millennia.

Native Americans, whose cultural traditions are as diverse as their languages are, can be found in every region of the country. The Seneca Nations of the Northeast, the Inuit communities of Alaska, the Cherokees of the South, and the Navajo of the Southwest are just a few examples. During the 15th century, when Europeans first set foot in America, the continent was inhabited by an estimated 50 million Native Americans. Therefore, Native American Day commemorates the extensive cultural and traditional legacy that has been preserved by the Native Americans over the course of time.

The designation of National Native American Day as a holiday originated in 1998, following South Dakota’s proclamation of 1990 as a year of reconciliation between Native Americans and Caucasian populations; Columbus Day was subsequently renamed Native American Day. In commemoration of this occasion, individuals educate themselves on the numerous tribes and civilizations that overcame all challenges throughout what numerous Native Americans consider to be their genocide.
