National Pet Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Gases

Since humanity learned to control fire in 800,000 BCE, their relationship with carbon monoxide has been complicated. The first scientific examination of carbon monoxide poisoning from coal was conducted in 1716, despite the fact that Aristotle had already described the lethal vapours produced by burning coal.

Since its inception in 2020, National Pet Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety Day has been celebrated annually on September 17 in North America. The day was established so pet owners could learn about how hazardous carbon monoxide poisoning can be for their pets. Recent surveys of pet owners in the United States and Canada revealed that many pet owners are unaware of the symptoms and severity of CO toxicity. National Pet Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety Day highlights the dangers of carbon monoxide toxicity to our domesticated animals.

The background of National Pet Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety Day

Since humanity learned to control fire in 800,000 BCE, their relationship with carbon monoxide has been complicated. The first scientific examination of carbon monoxide poisoning from coal was conducted in 1716, despite the fact that Aristotle had already described the lethal vapours produced by burning coal. Until 1800, when scientist William Cruickshank classified the gas as a combination of carbon and oxygen, its composition was determined through a series of studies.

While carbon monoxide was initially recognised as a valuable reagent in the early 1900s, it has since gained a reputation as the most prevalent cause of air toxicity in a number of countries. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), carbon monoxide poisoning is the primary cause of emergency room visits in the U.S. Carbon monoxide toxicity kills animals at a rate twice that of humans, according to research. Miners in 1911 used mice and canaries, which have a very low tolerance for carbon monoxide, to detect dangerous levels of CO in the mine. Even though several treatments for CO poisoning were developed in the 20th century, the odourless and colourless nature of this gas makes it difficult to detect and has earned it the moniker’silent assassin.’

Kidde, a well-known manufacturer of residential smoke alarms and other safety devices, discovered through a survey conducted in the United States and Canada that many pet owners were oblivious of the dangers of carbon monoxide. This prompted the organisation to create a day to educate the public about the dangers and devastating effects of carbon monoxide on humans and animals.

5 fascinating facts about gases

The Middle East is believed to have discovered natural gas between 6000 and 2000 BCE, when lightning strikes ignited natural gas seeping from the ground.

In China, around 500 B.C., bamboo was used to create the earliest flutes.

While wet natural gas is preferred for use in the production of products and polymers, dry natural gas is commonly employed in heating and ventilation systems.

From vinyl flooring, carpets and piping to Aspirin, prosthetic limbs and heart valves to eyeglasses, deodorants and cell phones, natural gas is utilised in a vast array of everyday products.

China has nearly double the estimated recoverable shale gas resources of the United States.
