The origin of the rhyme ‘Pop Goes The Weasel’ dates back to the 1700s. On London’s City Road, the Eagle Tavern, also known as the Eagle Freehold Pub, is mentioned. The pub was closed in 1825 and converted into a music room until 1901, when it was reconstructed as a public house and continues to exist.

A vessel named Pop Goes In June of 1852, the Weasel took part in the Durham Regatta. In December of the same year, the rhyme ascended to prominence. In England, this was referred to as a social dance. On December 13, 1852, in Ipswich, a country dance ended with this rhyme. Soon after, on December 24, 1852, the royal family and their private parties were introduced to the chant. On December 28, 1852, it began to appear in publications and be advertised throughout England.

Initially, it was only a melody; the lyrics were added subsequently. In the late 1850s, it crossed the Atlantic Ocean from England to the United States. The rhyme quickly gained popularity there as well, although the words were still largely British. Therefore, the U.S. lyrics were written to differ slightly from the original, but the melody remained the same.
