A comprehensive genetic analysis conducted in 2021 revealed that today’s domestic horses originated in the lower Volga-Don region of Russia. A test of the genomes of 273 ancient horses indicates that, as these populations swiftly spread throughout Eurasia around 4,200 years ago, they supplanted nearly all of the indigenous breeds. It also demonstrated the selection of specific adaptations for horseback riding and the diffusion of equestrian material culture, including spoke-wheeled Sintashta chariots.
