World Autism Acceptance Day, also referred to as World Autism Day or World Autism Awareness Day, is annually observed on April 2. Adopted by the United Nations on 18 December 2007, this day aims to raise awareness and promote acceptance of individuals with autism spectrum disorder. (A.S.D.). In addition, it presents an opportunity to dispel misconceptions and erroneous beliefs regarding disability.
The background of World Autism Acceptance Day
The United Nations adopted World Autism Awareness Day on December 18, 2007. The holiday was proposed by Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, the Qatari United Nations representative at the time, and supported by all member states. This day seeks to bring attention to those with autism spectrum disorder. (A.S.D.). However, there has been some debate regarding the use of the term “autism awareness,” as several autism rights advocates have argued that the day’s purpose should not be limited to raising autism awareness. The Autistic Self Advocacy Network prefers the term “autism acceptance” because it encourages the elimination of prejudice against autistic people, as opposed to solely raising awareness about autism.
Autism spectrum disorder is a progressive developmental and neurological disorder that begins in early childhood and worsens throughout a person’s lifespan. It influences how a person interacts and communicates with others and how they learn. ASD is a’spectrum’ disorder because it can manifest in a wide variety of symptoms that differ from person to person.
There are four categories of ASD symptoms: behavioral, cognitive, developmental, and psychological. However, symptoms that transcend categories include avoiding eye contact, repetitive behaviors, anxiety, a change in voice, learning disabilities, inappropriate social interaction, and sound sensitivity. Genes and environmental factors may play a significant influence in the development of A.S.D., according to recent research.
