The background of National School Nurse Day

On October 1, 1902, Linda Richards was hired as the first school nurse to prevent absenteeism by consulting with children and families regarding infectious disease-related healthcare needs.

After a month of successful nursing operations in New York City schools, she oversaw the citywide implementation of evidence-based nursing practise. Since then, school nurses have continued to control infectious diseases, but their roles have expanded and diversified.

The relationship between a student’s health and their capacity to learn is inextricable. Children’s participation in the educational system is hampered by unmet health care requirements. The school nurse assists students in achieving academic success by administering examination, treatment, and follow-up care in the school setting. The school nurse assists students with their physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs, as well as their academic success.

According to the National Survey of Children with Special Healthcare Needs, 11,2 million American children are at risk for developing persistent physical, cognitive, social, or emotional issues. These pupils may require school-based health care, which school nurses are able to provide.

Since 1972, National School Nurse Day has been celebrated to honour school nurses. National School Nurse Day was established to bring attention to the significance of school nurses in the educational environment.
