Sharon first appeared among the top 1,000 most popular given names in the United States in 1925. The name's use as a feminine name originated in the early twentieth century.

National Sharon Day is annually observed on March 7. Sharon is an ancient Hebrew name for girls that means “Of the Fertile Plain.” Sharon is a Hebrew word that means ‘plain’ and also refers to the region between the Samarian Highlands and Israel’s coast. The line “I am the rose of Sharon” appears in the King James Bible translation of Song of Solomon, resulting in the naming of numerous flowering plants with the same moniker. Sharon is primarily a feminine given name in English-speaking countries at present. In the past, however, it was also a masculine given name. It is both a masculine and feminine given name in Israel.

The background of National Sharon Day

Sharon first appeared among the top 1,000 most popular given names in the United States in 1925. The name’s use as a feminine name originated in the early twentieth century. It may have been influenced by the protagonist of Adela Rogers St. Johns’ 1925 serial novel “The Skyrocket,” which was adapted into a 1926 romantic drama film starring Peggy Hopkins Joyce. In addition, a number of flowering plants are known as “Rose of Sharon,” including the majestic yellow blooms of the genus Hypericum and the exquisite pinkish Hibiscus. Sharon began as an androgynous name in the eighteenth century, but by the twentieth century, it had become exclusively feminine.

However, the name’s prevalence did not skyrocket until the mid-1930s and peaked in the 1940s, remaining in the top ten for the majority of the decade. Sharron was prominent in the United States from the 1930s to the 1970s, with its highest popularity occurring in 1943. In the 1940s, the peculiar spelling of the name ‘Sharyn’ reached its zenith in 1945.

The name’s prevalence has steadily declined since the 1940s, falling out of the top 100 in 1977 and the top 500 in 2001. In the 1960s, its popularity reached its zenith in the United Kingdom. It was the tenth most prevalent female name in 1964 and remained as high as seventeenth in 1974 (while it was ranked seventieth in the U.S.), but it has not been among the top 100 since the 1980s. In the majority of other English-speaking countries, including England and Wales, Australia, and New Zealand, the name reached its zenith of popularity during the 1950s and 1960s. Comparable to her prominence in the United States, Sharon peaked at number five in Canada in 1943 and 1944.
