On May 22, National Solitaire Day, let’s recognise the ingenuity behind solitaire and how it has amused us for decades. There is a wealth of history and interesting facts surrounding the game. Here is everything you must know.
Remember the countless hours spent playing patience after its 1990 release on Microsoft Windows? Well, you are not alone in your addiction to this card game, as over 242 million people from more than 200 countries share your fixation. Microsoft did not create patience merely for its entertainment value. It was designed to teach people how to use the mouse affixed to their computers and familiarise them with the device. Today, patience is one of the most popular and ubiquitous PC games known to man, and given that it is played by millions of people around the world, it appears that this trend will continue for many years.
Microsoft declared May 22 National Solitaire Day in 2018 in recognition of the game’s popularity. The purpose of this day is to honour the card game that has governed supreme for more than three decades by holding massive celebrations. In 2020, National Solitaire Day eclipsed the record for the number of solitaire games played in a single day, which had stood since 2000. Microsoft’s other official commemorations of the event include special surprises for the players, a double XP bonus in the game on Windows and mobile devices, and video tributes to supporters. 2019 also saw the induction of patience into the Video Game Hall of Fame.
