In functional linguistics, sentences are defined as units of written texts that are delimited by graphological characteristics, such as capitalization, and sentence markers, such as periods, question marks, and exclamation marks, among others. This is in contrast to a curve, which is delimited by phonological characteristics such as intonation and markers such as pauses, as well as a clause, which is a series of words representing a process that continues over time.

Often, phonology is considered a component of language structure. Grammar is another component of language structure. There is more to language than just sounds, and words cannot be viewed as simple syllable sequences.
