The background of National Utah Day

National Utah Day, despite being an unofficial holiday, honours the 45th state to achieve statehood in the United States, as well as the people and indigenous population who contributed to its formation. It is believed that a religious group travelled a considerable distance in search of a land where they would be free from persecution, making Utah’s settlement history quite unique.

The state of Utah was originally inhabited by Native American nations, including the Ute, from whom it derives its name. Mormon locals proposed the name Deseret, which, according to the Book of Mormon, signified ‘honeybee,’ for the newly admitted state. However, the Congress believed that the name sounded like “desert,” so it was renamed after the Ute tribe.

In 1847, the first Mormon settlers arrived in the territory. Approximately sixty percent of the state’s population is currently Mormon. Due to this, the state’s culture, politics, and daily life are heavily influenced by the church, but it has nonetheless embraced change over time.

The federal government possesses approximately two-thirds of Utah’s land, while the state owns roughly one-tenth. A minor portion is allocated to the native Americans for their use. Currently, Utah’s economy relies significantly on tourism, due to the state’s proximity to mountains with excellent skiing opportunities, agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. The state of Utah has evolved into a dynamic and diverse destination for tourists from all over the globe.

National Utah Day is an occasion to recognise the history and development of the state. Over the years, it has come into its own, made its way onto must-visit listings, and become a viable option for relocation.
