It’s a fun holiday that gives you an excuse to grab a bucket of popcorn, relax on the sofa, grab the remote control, and enjoy a day of good television. Learn more about how to observe National Streaming Day below.

The Background of National Streaming Day

Contrary to conventional belief, streaming services are not products of the twenty-first century. On September 5, 1995, E.S.P.N. streamed a live radio transmission of a baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners, marking the beginning of the internet stream broadcast era. Progressive Networks, based in Seattle, created cutting-edge technology that enabled thousands of subscribers worldwide to tune in. Neither the broadcast hosts nor the subscribers had any idea that this would be the first step in a streaming revolution involving films and television programmes. However, this was indicative of a lucrative opportunity.

The advent of H.T.T.P.-based adaptive streaming and content delivery networks (CDN) contributed to an increase in content demand from large audiences by the middle of the 2000s. Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim founded YouTube on February 14, 2005, giving users access to long-format videos, news, and entertainment. In December 2005, it became widely known, and the world of streaming has never been the same since.

Specifically, 2008 was a watershed year for streaming, as Microsoft introduced Smooth Streaming and Netflix debuted Watch Instantly. The N.B.C. was one of its first content providers when Hulu launched its private beta site around the same time.

However, the streaming industry as we know it today did not take off until 2013, when Netflix began producing original content. “Orange Is the New Black,” “House of Cards,” and “Masters of None” paved the way for original series created specifically for streaming services. Soon thereafter, films became popular content for streaming services. Since then, the entertainment industry has invested more time, money, and personnel in streaming platforms as the primary entertainment medium.
