Tennessee emerged as a significant arena for racial segregation demonstrations following the Memphis sanitation workers strike of 1968 and the Nashville sit-ins for the civil rights movement from 1959 to 1961. On April 4, while in Memphis to support sanitation workers, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.
