National Thomas Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Thomas the Apostle is the earliest and most prominent individual in history to possess this name. Thomas, also known as Didymus, was one of Jesus' twelve apostles in the 'New Testament.'

National Thomas Day is observed annually on July 22. This year, all Thomases will be honoured. Thomas is an English male given name with Aramaic (Hebrew) origins. It signifies ‘twin’ and is the name of Thomas the Apostle in the Greek ‘New Testament.’ Due to the spread of Christianity across the continent, it was a popular option for men in mediaeval Europe. The Norman invasion and occupation of England in the 11th century altered that, and by the 14th century, Thomas had become a common boy’s name.

The background of National Thomas Day

Thomas the Apostle is the earliest and most prominent individual in history to possess this name. Thomas, also known as Didymus, was one of Jesus’ twelve apostles in the ‘New Testament.’ He is a prominent figure among Indian Christians, who believe he preached the gospel in Tamilakam (South India) after travelling from Rome. He is revered by Indian Christians as their patron saint. Thomas the Apostle is also known for doubting Christ’s resurrection until he saw His crucifixion wounds sobbing. Saint Thomas holds a special spot in the hearts of Christians.

We can look up to Thomas Jefferson, a founding patriarch and the third President of the United States. Throughout the American Revolution, Jefferson represented Virginia in the Continental Congress. In 1790, Jefferson was designated as the nation’s first Secretary of State by President George Washington. During the establishment of the First Party System, Jefferson and other like-minded leaders, such as James Madison, established the Democratic-Republican Party. Throughout his presidency, he defended American shipping and trade interests against oppressive British trade regulations and Barbary pirates from North Africa, while expelling native tribes from newly annexed territories in the United States. In addition, Jefferson enacted a law prohibiting the importation of slaves.

Thomas Alva Edison, who invented, among other things, the light bulb, the automatic telegraph, the carbon telephone transmitter, and the phonograph, is last but not least. Edison was inspired by his work as a telegraph operator in the American Midwest, where he grew up. Throughout his tenure, he worked with industry giants such as Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone to create numerous inventions. Edison possesses over a thousand US patents and is widely regarded as the greatest inventor in the history of the United States.
