Pi Approximation Day in U.S. 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

In some form, Pi has been known for nearly 4,000 years. The ancient Babylonians used it to calculate the circumference of circles; its value was approximately 3.125.

Whether you’re a baker or a math whiz, today is your day — Pi Approximation Day on 22 July celebrates the concept of pi, which is denoted by the Greek letter pi and approximates 3.14 in the most mathematically-pleasing manner. Many bake pies on pi day in order to make additional punny remarks. It’s a wonderful day to celebrate the mathematical concept used in so many calculations and to eat delicious pie!

The background of Pi Approximation Day

In some form, Pi has been known for nearly 4,000 years. The ancient Babylonians used it to calculate the circumference of circles; its value was approximately 3.125. Around 250 B.C., one of the finest ancient mathematicians, Archimedes of Syracuse, first calculated pi. He discovered that pi lay between 3 1/7 and 3 10/71. Pi is sometimes referred to as ‘Archimedes’s Constant.’

In the middle of the fifth century, another brilliant mathematician, Zu Chongzhi, performed protracted calculations to recalculate pi. Due to the fact that Archimedes’ texts were lost and not in China at the time, Zu calculated pi in a novel manner. Prior to Zu and Archimedes, these two scientists were the first to truly comprehend pi.

Using circumscribed and inscribed polygons, mathematicians later attempted to better approximate pi. This is how Archimedes first calculated pi, and it remained the dominant algorithm for pi computation for the next thousand years. This method yielded the most accurate approximation of pi in 1630, when Austrian astronomer Christoph Grienberger arrived at 38 precise digits.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the development of the infinite series (the sum of the elements of an infinite sequence) revolutionised the calculation of pi. Indian mathematicians discovered it between 1400 and 1500 A.D., but European mathematicians such as Leibniz and Gregory popularised it a century later. Although the concept of pi had been known for centuries, it wasn’t until 1706 that the Greek letter pi came to represent it. William Jones, a Welsh mathematician, proposed this, but it was not popularised until Leonhard Euler used it in 1737.

In modern times, countless computing resources have been devoted to approximating the infinite, irrational number to the greatest extent possible. In 1957, George Reitwiesner and John von Neumann used an ENIAC computer to compute 2,037 digits of pi for the first time by machine. Numerous daring mathematicians followed. By 1973, this method had attained a million digits.

Calculating pi became a valuable stress test for a computer’s capabilities, similar to a cardiac exam. Mathematicians desired more precise pi calculations for cosmology, despite the fact that few digits are required for most endeavours. Emma Haruka Iwao, a Google employee, has earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for calculating the most digits of pi to date: 31 trillion.

PI APPROXIMATION DAY ACTIVITIES

Bake some pi(e)

Pi Approximation Day is the ideal punny excuse for many bakers to whip up a pie. Numerous Pi Approximation Day pastries feature pi, the Greek letter, as an embellishment!

Memorise pi

One of the most notable characteristics of pi is its infinity. It continues without pattern or repetition indefinitely, making it both transcendental and irrational. It is an enjoyable challenge for both students and mathematicians to memorise as many digits of the number as possible. Today, challenge a friend or relative to surpass your knowledge of pi.

Honour mathematics.

Pi Approximation Day is a commemoration of all the mathematics that pi has made possible. It is necessary for the fundamental calculation of a circle’s circumference, but NASA also uses pi in a variety of ways, such as calculating spacecraft trajectories! Pi is a necessary constant for some of the most fundamental mathematics we know.

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT PI

Even though you’ve been using pi to calculate the area and circumference of a circle since elementary school, you’ll never know the exact measurements because nobody knows what pi is.

The record for memorising and reciting the most digits of pi is 70,000, set by a VIT University student named Rajveer Meena; the feat took 10 hours!

Believe it or not, pi was a part of Ancient Egyptian mythology; the Egyptians used the principles of pi to construct their magnificent pyramids.

Despite the fact that pi cannot be completely calculated, mathematicians have programmed computers to calculate as many decimals of pi as possible; we’re currently at over 31 trillion digits.

In 1706, Welsh mathematician William Jones introduced the greek symbol for pi () to replace the old, cumbersome identifier: “the quantity that, when multiplied by the diameter, yields the circumference.”
