Portugal Restoration of Independence Day 2023: There is a holiday in Portugal every year on December 1 called Portugal Restoration of Independence Day. Day of Restoring Independence, or Portugal Independence Day is a national event in Portugal that marks the day that the country rose up against Spanish rule and got its freedom back after 60 years of Spanish rule. With the Treaty of Lisbon, the war between Portugal and Spain came to an end. It started with the Portuguese Revolution.

During King João IV’s whole rule, he fought hard to keep Spain from taking over Portugal. Portugal and the Dutch Republic made a deal to work together on June 12, 1641. Both sides disobeyed it, and it had no impact on Dutch-ruled Brazil or Angola at the time.
Soon after Afonso VI turned 18 in 1662, Luís de Vasconcelos e Sousa, 3rd Count of Castelo Melhor, became friendly with the mentally ill king. He was able to convince the king that his mother was planning to take his throne and send him away from Portugal. As a sign that he was in charge, Afonso sent his mother to a convent and made Castelo Melhor his hidden notary. Castelo Melhor could do the work of the first minister because of this post. It was Afonso’s weakness that made Castelo Melhor almost ruler of Portugal.

End of the 28-year war: the Treaty of Lisbon with Spain, signed in 1668. After a lot of talks between people from both countries, Mariana of Austria, who was regent of Spain, finally accepted the legitimacy of the Portuguese monarch. She did this on behalf of her young son Charles II of Spain. Spain kept all of its remaining colonies outside of Europe except for Ceuta, which was on the coast of North Africa and didn’t support the Braganza Dynasty during the war.
