Do you realize that it has been 175 years since the birth of the sage Ramakrishna? Ramakrishna Jayanti, whose name derives from the Sanskrit word for “birthday,” commemorates the birthday of the renowned sage Ramakrishna. Ramakrishna, a religious leader and reformer, was a devoted devotee of Goddess Kali. Even today, many years after his passing, devotees congregate at the Ramakrishna Math, a charitable trust founded by Ramakrishna’s student Swami Vivekananda, to pray and make donations.

It is believed that Ramakrishna’s parents had spiritual experiences and premonitions indicating that God would descend to Earth in the form of their son. Ramakrishna enrolled in school but shortly dropped out because he believed the education system was flawed. He believed that the education system was designed so that students would learn less about spirituality and life’s essentials, and instead teach them how to make money and survive in this world.
Ramakrishna had multiple trance experiences during his youth. His first experience was when he was enraptured by the sight of flying cranes in a dark blue, thundercloud-filled sky.
In 1855, Ramkrishna was designated as the head priest of the Rani Rashmoni-constructed Dakshineswar Kali Temple. Later on, Ramakrishna had a massive following. William Hastie, a professor at the Scottish Church College, was one of his most renowned students. Hastie urged Narendranath Dutta and a small number of other students to visit Ramakrishna. Dutta was initially skeptical, but upon reaching Ramakrishna’s Mathematics, he was captivated. Dutta later became known as Swami Vivekananda, after becoming an ardent devotee of Ramakrishna.
In 1885, Ramakrishna was diagnosed with pharynx cancer, and he passed away in 1886. Vivekananda led a group of disciples and established a fellowship in Baranagar, close to the Ganges. Thus, March 15 was designated as Ramakrishna Jayanti to commemorate the establishment of Ramakrishna Math.
