Independence Day of the Seychelles occurs on June 29. Since its attainment of independence in 1976, the Seychelles have been a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Arab merchants and Malagasy immigrants then visited the islands, although evidence of their visit is still lacking. The British East India Company ship Ascension made the first recorded landing on the island in 1609, but did not establish there.

Then, 140 years later, France shifted its focus to Seychelles in an effort to establish a faster route from Mauritius to India. The French administrator of Mauritius, Bertrand-Francois Mahé de La Bourdonnais, dispatched the explorer Lazare Picault to locate the archipelago. In 1742, Picault arrived on the island that today carries the administrator’s name, Mahé.

As a consequence of the French Revolution, in 1790 the colonists established the Colonial Assembly and resolved to govern their colony. They believed that Seychelles’ land should be given to the children of current colonists, who have the right to lead the colony as they see appropriate, as opposed to Mauritius. Jean-Baptiste Queau de Quincy assumed control of the colony in 1794. He utilised his intelligence and foresight to guide Seychelles through the coming years of conflict.

Edward Madge was the first civilian administrator of the British regime. He had a bitter dispute with Quincy, who continued to serve as a Justice of the Peace. In 1964, new political movements began to emerge. In this year, the Seychelles People’s United Party (S.P.U.P. ), which subsequently evolved into the Seychelles People’s Progressive Front (S.P.P.F. ), was established. They advocated socialism and independence from Britain under the leadership of France-Albert René. After elections in 1974, during which both Seychelles political parties campaigned for independence, negotiations with the British resulted in an agreement establishing Seychelles as an independent republic within the Commonwealth on June 29, 1976.
