Visit the Zoo Day 2023: Date, History and Ideas For Celebrating World Zoo Day

In class, we all read books about animals and their environments. But perhaps the best way to put all those lessons into practice is to see and observe them in real life.

Visit the Zoo Day 2023: Annual Visit the Zoo Day is observed on December 27. While the exact beginnings of the day are unknown, we do know that the concept of the zoo dates back several millennia. The simplest method to refer to a zoological park or garden is, in fact, with the word “zoo.” Zoos usually contain a variety of species and serve as safe havens for the animals kept there.

The History Of World Zoo Day

A “menagerie” was an ancestor of the zoo or zoological garden. Reportedly, it was substantially smaller than the contemporary zoo. The earliest zoos were private collections used as a status symbol. In Egypt, archaeologists found vestiges of a menagerie that they estimate to be from 3500 B.C. Well-known monarchs from their respective eras, such King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia, King Solomon of Israel, and King Alexander the Great of Greece, were avid animal collectors. There is also evidence of these kinds of zoos or animal collections in China and Rome.

The first “modern” zoo was constructed in Paris, France, in 1793. It seems that the concept of the contemporary public zoo gained traction in the eighteenth century, during the Age of Enlightenment when science started to take center stage in society. People wanted to study animals to learn more about their physiology and behavior, among other things. In 1828, the first modern zoo opened in the city of London. Gradually, animals from the menagerie in the Tower of London were added to its collection, and in 1847 the zoo officially opened to the public.

Early contemporary zoos did not prioritize serving as natural homes for the animals kept there. Rather, they resembled small-scale museums housing living creatures in exhibit spaces. Today’s zoos aim to educate and amuse the general public while simultaneously advancing scientific study and supporting animal conservation.
