Walk in the Sand Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Patti Jewel founded Walk in the Sand Day in 2012 to recognise the health benefits of wandering barefoot in the sand. She conceived of this day to share with the world the experience and pleasure of beach walks.

Walk in the Sand Day is annually observed on the Saturday following the March equinox. This year’s event occurs on March 25. This happens at the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and fall in the Southern Hemisphere. You’ve undoubtedly seen adorable photos of people walking on the beach while on vacation on social media. However, strolling in the sand has benefits that extend beyond its aesthetic appeal on Instagram. It offers a tranquil experience as you watch the waves, take in the sunset/sunrise, observe birds, search for marine life, collect beautiful shells, and immerse yourself in the splendour of nature. The sensation of strolling barefoot in the sand is calming and relaxing, which is good for your mental and physical health.

The background of Walk in the Sand Day

Patti Jewel founded Walk in the Sand Day in 2012 to recognise the health benefits of wandering barefoot in the sand. She conceived of this day to share with the world the experience and pleasure of beach walks. Jewel is a beach advocate who visits the ocean for mental and physical rejuvenation. She has expanded the purpose of the day to encourage people to appreciate and protect beaches all over the globe.

She is also a staunch advocate and activist for environmental protection, beach preservation, and sharing the splendour of these extraordinary natural resources. She is the proprietor of WalkintheSand.com and FloridaSmart.com and has written for over a decade about Florida’s beaches.

Walking in the sand is an enjoyable method to exercise your legs. It enables you to walk more slowly and appreciate nature while getting a better exercise, expending more calories, and appreciating the experience more.

Walking on dry sand requires additional effort. Therefore, you get to exercise more leg and foot muscles. The firmer sand near the water is ideal for a quick stroll. Compared to strolling on pavement, walking on sand places less stress on your feet and joints due to its greater pliability. This helps prevent the progression of degenerative conditions such as spinal arthritis over time.

Prior to the 18th century, the oceans inspired fear in people, but they are now sites of relaxation and mental rejuvenation. Increasing numbers of people visit beaches annually for health and recreation.
