The background of World Day of Theatre for Children and Young People

On March 20, 2001, the first World Day of Theatre for Children and Young People was observed. It is an initiative of The International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People. It is the only organization that connects tens of thousands of theatre professionals, artists, educators, and producers worldwide who are committed to theatre for children.

There are members in over 80 countries worldwide, as well as 75 National Centers. The objective is to reconnect children with live performance, ideas, emotions, and the human-to-human connection. It seeks to protect the rights of children and adolescents to arts and culture, as well as their freedom of expression. Every year, special world day messages are written, and all members are encouraged to promote them in addition to sharing the ASSITEJ film.

Sue Giles AM, who has been a vice president of ASSITEJ International since 2017, penned a note to commemorate the day in 2021 that emphasized the message and notion that the rights of children to the arts and culture should remain a priority and is something that everyone should advocate for. She believes that the roles of artists and society members are crucial to identity and social cohesion. Every three years, ASSITEJ conducts a World Congress and Performing Arts Festival. Warsaw, Prague, Lyon, Madrid, Adelaide, Seoul, Rostov on Don, Troms, and Albany were among the international locales where this event took place.
