World Flour Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Humans have consumed flour made from ground cereals for centuries. 32,000 years ago, the human diet included flour.

World Flour Day is recognized and commemorated annually on March 20. On this day, we will all celebrate flour, also known as “white gold.” For some, flour is about sustenance, survival, and satiating satiety and hunger; for others, it is about cultivating culinary creativity and producing the finest foods and products for human consumption. Flour is produced from grains including amaranth, brown rice, buckwheat, barley, maize, millet, and rye. Flour is used to make bread, pasta, cakes, cookies, crackers, cereals, pastries, pies, and pizza, among other delicacies.

The background of World Flour Day

Humans have consumed flour made from ground cereals for centuries. 32,000 years ago, the human diet included flour. In the southern Italian region of Puglia, in a cave known as Grotta Paglicci, scientists discovered a stone-grinding device resembling a pestle. They discovered that it was used to grind grains into granular flour.

The Flour World Museum established World Flour Day on March 20, 2019, to recognize the global significance of flour in people’s lives. The Registrar of the National Day Calendar authorized and proclaimed in 2019 that World Flour Day would be observed annually on March 20. The date was chosen because it coincides with the equinox, which occurs between March 19 and March 21, the time for fertilizing, planting, and spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn and harvest in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Flour World Museum in Wittenberg, Germany, opened its doors in 2008 and is home to the world’s largest collection of flour sacks, with the intention of reminding and showcasing the magnificence of this simple yet essential staple. The museum contains numerous chambers, with the Sackotheque containing over 3,600 artifacts serving as a central feature. Through its close ties with the International Milling Family, the museum also intends to honor and express gratitude to the millers. Their website encourages all visitors to share their personal experiences with “white gold,” also known as flour.
