World Sketchnote Day 2023: Date, History and Facts

Traditional history places the earliest recorded writings by humans in Mesopotamia between 3400 and 3300 B.C., yet note-taking and inventive methods of collecting thoughts have always been in demand.

World Sketchnote Day 2023 occurs annually on January 11. In 2016, it secured a place among the holidays on the calendar. The term “sketchnotes” is a combination of the phrases “sketch” and “notes.” The art has a wide following. Numerous sketchnoters have their say (and their picture) and have created numerous formats, including traditional sketchnotes, drawn recipes (sketchipes), pleasant travel recollections in sketch form, to-do lists, and shopping lists. The act of sketchnoting itself has two effects: it aids in memory retention and it improves one’s disposition through the usage of adorable images. It requires good listening skills and the capacity to sift through information to visually record what is essential.

HISTORY OF WORLD SKETCHNOTE DAY

Traditional history places the earliest recorded writings by humans in Mesopotamia between 3400 and 3300 B.C., yet note-taking and inventive methods of collecting thoughts have always been in demand. One method for accomplishing this is brainstorming, in which people gather to generate new ideas through creative thinking and the use of sketches and phrases. Sketchnoting expands on this by encouraging individuals to take notes in an engaging and memorable manner.

The first mention of sketchnoting — sketch (visuals) + notes (text) — dates back to early 2007, when designer Michael Rohde decided to try out a new method. This was done to improve understanding while taking copious notes. While attending a symposium on design, he had only brought a pocket-sized notepad, which was insufficient for writing everything. He started listening and analysing, writing and drawing the huge things he was hearing, seeing, and thinking about. Thus, the method of sketchnoting, which combines sketching with taking notes, was born. And others began to follow suit.

The artwork makes use of the Visual Alphabet, a collection of forms and symbols that may be utilised to produce a variety of sketches. It resembles the way that letters combine to make words. As required, basic shapes such as dots, circles, lines, waves, triangles, and squares can be rotated, warped, and mixed. Individuals are free to utilise the symbols and sketches as they see fit, and they construct their own alphabet based on their personal meaning associations.
