What are cigarettes?

Cigarettes are small, thin cylinders of tobacco that are rolled in paper. They are smoked by lighting one end and inhaling the smoke through the other. Cigarettes are addictive because they contain nicotine, a substance that is found in tobacco leaves. Nicotine is a stimulant that affects the brain and nervous system.

Cigarettes are hazardous to your health for many reasons. They are a leading cause of lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke. They also increase your risk of developing other cancers, such as bladder, throat, and mouth cancer. Smoking cigarettes can also cause emphysema, a chronic lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe.

If you currently smoke cigarettes, quitting is the best thing you can do for your health. There are many resources available to help you quit smoking for good. Talk to your doctor about quitting smoking and ask about nicotine replacement therapy or other medications that can help you quit successfully.

HISTORY OF CIGARETTES ARE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH DAY

Cigarettes resembled their precursor and near relative, the cigar, in their earliest forms. In the 9th century, they are believed to have developed in Mexico and Central America in the shape of reeds and smoking tubes. During religious rites, Maya and later Aztec tribes smoked tobacco and other psychotropic substances, and they commonly painted depictions of priests and deities smoking on temple engravings. In the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central and South America, cigarette smoking and cigar smoking were the most prevalent forms of tobacco use until recent years.

North American, Central American, and South American cigarettes had varied plant wrappers, and upon their return to Spain, maize wrappers and fine paper wrappers were introduced. In his 18th-century paintings ‘La Cometa, La Merienda en el Manzanares’ and ‘El game de la pelota a pala,’ Goya depicts the final product, which was known as ‘papelate.’ In 1830, the cigarette arrived in France, where it was given the now-common term “cigarette.”

In 1845, the French government monopoly on tobacco began manufacturing cigarettes. The English acquired the French term for this product in the 1840s. Although some American reformers advocated for the spelling ‘cigaret,’ it never caught on and has now become obsolete. Subsequently, the prevalence of tobacco usage in English-speaking societies increased during and after the Crimean War. British soldiers copied their Ottoman Turkish comrades (and Russian foes), whom they observed rolling and smoking tobacco on strips of old newspaper due to a lack of tobacco rolling paper. This was facilitated by the evolution of tobacco for use in cigarettes and the growth of the Egyptian cigarette export sector.
