The background of World Youth Skills Day

The United Nations was established on October 24, 1945, after its Charter was ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States, among other signatories. The organization’s mission has always been to preserve international peace and security, provide humanitarian aid, defend human rights, and uphold international law. It was established to replace the League of Nations, which disbanded prior to the Second World War.

Throughout its years of existence, the United Nations has played an active role in global politics. It has adapted to changes in international relations, such as the decolonization of the Global South, the end of the Cold War, the emergence of the United States as a hegemon, climate change, refugee crises, etc. Today, the United Nations is pursuing its seventeen sustainable development objectives.

The United Nations proclaimed World Youth Skills Day in 2014. The purpose of this day was to cast light on the skills young people need for employment and entrepreneurship, as well as their strategic significance for the future. This day presents a unique opportunity for policy partners, employers, development partners, and vocational and training educational programmes to engage in a dialogue with young people about the skills required as the world transitions to a model of sustainable development.
