About the Derry Girls Television Programme

Derry Girls is a coming-of-age comedy television series set in Northern Ireland in the 1990s during The Troubles. It follows Erin, Clare, Orla, and Michelle, four teenage girls who attend an all-girls Catholic school in Derry, as they navigate their adolescent lives with humour and compassion.

Saoirse-Monica Jackson portrayed Erin Quinn, Louisa Harland portrayed Orla McCool, Nicola Coughlan portrayed Clare Devlin, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell portrayed Michelle Mallon, Dylan Llewellyn portrayed James Maguire, and Tara Lynne O’Neill portrayed Aunt Sarah.

The show is a mixture of comedy and drama, with moments of genuine emotion as the characters cope with adolescent issues such as heartbreak, family issues, and growing up. The series also explores sectarianism and the IRA in relation to the political tension in Northern Ireland at the time.

Since its 2018 debut on Netflix, the programme has been met with widespread acclaim. It won multiple accolades, including two BAFTA Television accolades in 2019 and 2020 for Best Scripted Comedy and Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme, respectively.

Derry Girls demonstrates that comedy can be both humorous and profound; it is one of the most iconic programmes of its generation. Even if the programme ends after Season 3, Derry Girls will remain in the hearts of viewers for many years.
