Bodhi Day 2023: Date, History and ways to celebrate it

The teachings of Bodhi Day are incomparable; they inspire us to live authentically and discover the purpose of our existence.

Bodhi Day 2023: Every year on December 8, Japan celebrates Bodhi Day. In the lunisolar calendar, it usually occurs on the eighth day of the twelfth month. The day, called Rohatsu in Japanese, was transferred to its present date by Emperor Meiji as part of Japan’s westernization process and the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. Many people will benefit from this day, which is spiritually energizing.

The Origins of Bodhi Day

On Bodhi Day, people commemorate the event that happened 2,500 years ago when Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment and turned into the Buddha, also known as the “awakened one.” According to legend, at the age of 29, Siddharta left the comforts of the palace and embarked on a journey of introspection to find meaning in life, turning down the opulent lifestyle of a prince.

He made the commitment to keep meditating until he attained “bodhi,” or “enlightenment,” while he was in the northeastern Indian town of Bodh Gaya, beneath the Peepal tree, a species of Banyan fig. At the age of 35, he achieved bodhi through 49 days of nonstop meditation. He attained a state of enlightenment where he could see the interconnectedness of all things, leading him to formulate the Four Noble Truths: Dukkha (unsatisfactoriness), Samudaya (arising), Nirodha (cessation), and Magga (path), which is the path that leads to the Eightfold Path.

On this day, Buddhists study the “dharma,” or “universal truth or law,” chant sutras, or Buddhist texts, meditate, and do good deeds for other beings. Some observe the day in a more conventional manner by preparing a tea and cake meal. Throughout the month, plantings of bodhi trees take place, often accompanied by tea ceremonies; the following month, incense and multicolored lights are showcased in Tokyo, the nation’s capital, as well as in various towns and villages.

But only Buddhists, who account for about 34% of the population in Japan, celebrate Bodhi Day, which is not recognized as an official holiday in that nation.
